Upskilling SMEs
Building sustainability into a business from day one helps avoid expensive retrofits later. We see this repeatedly with disruptive technologies and changing market condition; smaller businesses are often able to adapt more quickly and with greater agility.
Supporting SMEs to embed sustainability early in their business journey is a key priority for the UK and devolved governments. As a result, Local Authorities, government bodies and Business Gateways are increasingly integrating sustainability into their business support programmes.
In 2026, we supported Connect Three in delivering the Glasgow Business Growth Programme, providing expert sustainability support to SMEs across the city.
Through two interactive workshops and a series of mentoring sessions, we shared practical advice, tools and real-world examples to help Glasgow-based SMEs develop actionable plans to become more sustainable.
Our first workshop, led by Gemma Branney, focused on embedding sustainability into organisational culture by integrating it across every part of the business. Participants completed a high-level materiality assessment to identify the issues most relevant to their organisation, before developing plans to secure leadership buy-in, engage colleagues and build momentum.
We also delivered a panel event for a wider audience exploring how strategic partnerships can support business growth. Bringing together perspectives from charities, suppliers, funders, investors and business networks, the session demonstrated how collaboration can help organisations solve complex challenges more effectively and unlock new opportunities.
Alongside this programme, we have delivered similar workshops and advice sessions with Barclays Eagle Labs and a range of business networks, helping SMEs build the knowledge and confidence to progress on their sustainability journey. We recognise that dedicated in-house sustainability teams, or consultancy support, are often beyond the reach of smaller businesses. Combining free workshops with affordable one-to-one advice clinics provides an accessible, practical way for SMEs to make meaningful progress, regardless of budget.
